From Memphis to Momentum: My Journey with Goldman Sachs Black in Business

Published by Valencia Leonard, Founder of Oh Sweets Skin Care

If you had told me years ago that my passion for skincare and self-care would lead me to New York City as a graduate of the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women: Black in Business program, I might’ve smiled politely—but silently doubted it. Yet here I am, writing this blog with a full heart and a fired-up vision for what’s next.

Over the last 10 weeks, I had the honor of being one of nearly 300 Black women selected from across the country to participate in this powerful program. Hosted in partnership with NYU Stern School of Business, the Black in Business program gave us access to strategic tools, expert coaching, and a sisterhood of entrepreneurs who all shared one thing in common: we are building legacy.

For me, the timing was divine. Oh Sweets Skin Care has always been about more than bath products. It’s about giving people—especially women and working families—the permission to pause, breathe, and heal. Through workshops, corporate wellness events, and our aromatherapy line, I’ve seen the power of self-care as a catalyst for deeper transformation. But I also knew I needed guidance to grow my business beyond the grind.

This program gave me exactly that.

I learned how to strengthen my financial systems, define my core business model, and scale intentionally without losing the heart of my mission. Most importantly, I learned I’m not alone. Being surrounded by ambitious, purpose-driven Black women reminded me that our power multiplies when we pour into each other.

To Goldman Sachs and NYU Stern: thank you for believing in women like me.

To every entrepreneur still pushing, still dreaming, still building: keep showing up. Your next level isn’t just possible—it’s already in motion.

Let’s keep glowing and growing.
